3 STYLES THAT I SWEAR WERE MADE FOR ME! (+ HOW TO FIND YOURS)

WRITTEN BY SHARRA GREENE

Everyone has them. The looks that when you wear them, just seem to fit you like a glove, bring out your best features, turn heads, and make you feel like your flyest and highest self. As a stylist, I go through a lot of trial and error when trying new looks and over time, I’ve come across a few styles that I’m never letting go of. Here are mine, along with some of the ways I help myself, my family and friends, and my clients find their most flattering go-to pieces.

DRAMATIC EARRINGS

As you can clearly see, they’re a fave of mine. I get asked all the time where I buy my earrings and the truth is, I don’t discriminate. I get them everywhere from my local hair store to my favorite online shops. The busier the better, especially when I’m wearing a relatively simple look I love to throw on a pair of bomb statement earrings to change my look up in one step.

I am wearing a ribbed fringe sleeve mini dress by Akira , PLT studded belt and snakeskin thigh high boots , double disc earrings from Forever 21 , vintage clutch, bangles and ring I got forever ago.

THIGH HIGH BOOTS

Anyone who knows me, knows how I feel about my OTK boots. Anything over the knee keeps my legs warm while still showcasing my personal style through the texture and details of the boots that I choose, especially in the Fall & Winter months.

HIGH SLIT SKIRTS

I’m so quick to throw on a high slit maxi skirt because it makes my torso appear longer while showcasing my legs which I love. In order to switch it up, I’ll buy high slit skirts in different fabrics to diversify my looks. I have a faux suede one, a jersey material one, and a crochet one for Summer, but regardless of which I one I wear, I can never go wrong with this style on me.

HOW TO FIND YOUR STYLES THAT WERE MADE FOR YOU…

tumblr_nckwwfoqrG1rn3hqmo1_500.jpg

WHAT LOOKS DO PEOPLE COMPLIMENT YOU ON THE MOST?

That great pair of gold pumps that has your calf muscles POPPIN’ when you put em on? That freakum dress that hugs your silhouette just right and has people noticing your gym wins? Pay attention to the details of those pieces. Why do you think people compliment you on them? Is it the shape that it gives your body? The color of the piece that pops on your skin tone? Once you figure that out, you can start to curate more pieces for your wardrobe that have those attributes.

WATCH YOUR POSTURE!

Which looks have you walking different when you slip them on? When your posture elevates, your shoulders are back, you hold your head a little higher after getting dressed, it means you’re feeling confident. Pay attention to the looks that make you feel this way and then ask yourself what you specifically like about the look that ups your confidence and gives you your supermodel walk. Whether it makes you feel sexier, edgier, or just more self expressive, try only wearing pieces that make you feel this good. It will radiate from within because of course, when you look good, you feel good and vice versa.

LISTEN WHEN PEOPLE SAY “THAT LOOKS LIKE YOU”

Honestly, I used to get SO annoyed when I’d go shopping with a relative or friend and they’d point out a shirt or a bag and say “that looks like you.” or “that reminds me of you.” Sometimes I still do, especially if I’m not feeling the look they’re trying to show me. I don’t know if its the Leo in me or what, but I just felt like “How can you tell ME what is… “me?” Though I still tend to feel this way occasionally, I also have learned to not be so defensive about it because a lot of times the comment can really be a compliment in disguise.

For someone to stay something reminds them specifically of you, it could mean the person thinks you have a unique and distinctive style. Because I feel like my style is so versatile due to the fact that I wear whatever I think looks cute regardless of aesthetic, I'm now more open minded to other people’s suggestions because my style is constantly evolving and improving. You should be, too. Next time someone points out a look that they feel reminds them of you, ask yourself how you could style it to make it more “you”? Consider it an opportunity to help you find more flattering looks and build on your personal style.

That’s all for now, stay tuned for more style content coming very soon to the blog!

CONVOS WITH CLAIRE NYC 2018 RECAP! MAJOR NETWORKING VIBES AND INSIGHT FROM THE INDUSTRY'S BEST

WRITTEN BY SHARRA GREENE & PHOTOS BY LAURENCE JAMES

So, this past weekend, I attended the well-anticipated Convos With Claire fashion networking mixer. I’m pretty sure most know who trailblazing fashion media maven Claire Sulmers is (especially if you follow posts on here because she’s my role model) , but for those of you who don’t know, Claire is the founder and editor in Chief of Fashion Bomb Daily, one of the world’s most influential fashion websites. She also maintains her own lifestyle blog called The Bomb Life, while serving as an influencer and brand ambassador for the likes of Verizon, Martini & Rossi, and more.

I finally met Claire during fashion week back in September, so I was definitely excited to link with her again! At her mixers, Claire is known for bringing together the stylish and ambitious discuss various topics in fashion and business with some of the industry’s best. For this particular event, Claire brought out a star studded panel to drop gems on us, at the Flat NYC on 24th Street. Panelists included Celebrity Stylist, Designer, Instructor, and Global Creative Partner of MCM, Misa Hylton, Television Personality & Entrepreneur Bevy Smith, and Designer and Furrier to your celeb faves, Duckie Confetti. The event’s theme was animal print.

Starting with a BOMB VIP Brunch and red carpet welcome featuring DJ JFK, the atmosphere was intriguing and inviting as fashion creatives settled in to vibe and shop. Claire typically uses her events to bring awareness to dope brands that many may not be familiar with already. Vendors included: Black Tag ApparelMess in a BottleNroda SunglassesRed Eye Luxe, Boutte Rouge BoutiqueYvonne JewnellLaMonique Cosmetics, and Vanity Storm.

I instantly connected with a few fellow bloggers as we helped each other flick it up while bouncing our creative ideas off of each other. Not long after, the panel began as my photographer arrived to help me get content. I literally gained so much knowledge and insight but a few of my main takeaways included…

“MAKE STRATEGIC MOVES WITHIN YOUR BUSINESS RELATIONSHIPS THAT WILL LATER ON BE PROFITABLE IN THE LONG TERM” -via DUCKIE CONFETTI

Talking about doing “work for free”, so to speak, is often a topic that is considered almost taboo in the fashion industry. As fashionistas questioned what type of “free” work was the right move, Duckie gave insight on how he strategizes when it comes to this. He shared how he gave Meek Mill’s stylist a leopard sleeve hoodie free of charge, knowing that seeing the very well known rapper in his merch would influence people to shop (he was right, this one move alone made him 6 figures). He stressed to us the importance of making sacrifices for your brand that will likely have a high upside, financially.

“THE STRUGGLE IS GOOD FOR YOU, IT GIVES YOU CONFIDENCE, SUBSTANCE & GRIT!”- via BEVY SMITH

Though Bevy is now a very well established professional, she shared how there was a 7 year era where she would have to “go out and hunt and kill” for work. She stressed how though this was one of the most difficult times of her life, it was the time in her life that built her character the most. Bevy encouraged those on the quest to manifest big dreams to not be in the rush for “success” or “stardom” and to embrace their current struggles because quite often the struggle itself is what’s propelling you toward the life you dream about.

“YOUR VISION IS CLEAR, NOW JUST CONTINUE TO EXECUTE” - via MISA HYLTON

Upon me asking iconic stylist Misa Hylton what moves I should make to continuously set me apart in my craft, she asked what makes me unique. Once I told her how it’s my passion for who my clients truly are and using that to create looks that speak to their highest self, she reassured me how clear my individuality already is.

Misa shared how it took her a while to gain confidence as a stylist being that she first got into the business with her then boyfriend. But it took for her to keep going after they ended to really recognize who she was and what she wanted to achieve as a stylist. She let me know that from here on out, its all about using the knowledge I gain from each experience to move forward and do what works for me because the path for everyone is not the same.

“KEEP GOING, YOU NEVER KNOW WHO YOU’RE POSITIVELY INFLUENCING “ - via CLAIRE SULMERS

While sharing with us how she felt so close to giving up lately due to the challenges that Fashion Bomb Daily had been facing as a business, she simply didn’t. She got emotional looking at the AMAZING turn out of the event, saying that was just what she needed to reassure her that she was doing something right. She inspired us to keep going because we never know who we’re motivating and influencing. The mixer’s turn out was living proof of that!

IMG_0017.JPG

After a little more networking and connecting, I left the event SO ready to execute on the new insight. It’s crazy because this past week, I hadn’t been feeling well at all. A couple days before leaving for the event, I came down with the worst cold I’ve had in a while so I was feeling so drained. Honestly, as excited as I was for the meet up, the last thing I felt like doing was going out. But this weekend definitely taught me that you never know what blessings and great opportunities you give up when you only focus on what you feel like doing.

I wanna encourage you to also push past your comfort zone, even when you may not feel like it. Take time to invest in your craft and don’t be afraid to seek out experiences that will contribute to your growth!

A FASHION FINESSE: 3 TIPS THAT I GIVE MY CLIENTS TO QUICKLY LEVEL UP WHAT’S ALREADY IN THEIR CLOSET

WRITTEN BY SHARRA GREENE

First rule of searching for a bomb look: SHOP YOUR CLOSET FIRST! Though each client that I work with has different needs, there are always a few life hacks that I often give them to help make their life easier with what they already have at home. In this post, I'm sharing some of the simple yet major keys that I give my clients by sharing a few ways to flip your go-to pieces in your wardrobe!

SWAP OUT YOUR COMFY TEES FOR A SEXY TOP TO GO WITH YOUR FAVE DENIM

FullSizeRender.jpg

This one is the perfect compromise, especially if you're a jeans and flats type of girl. If comfort typically comes first for you when it comes to dressing, going with the v cut top with spaghetti straps or ruffles that we typically save for date night with bae, can add more of a dressier take to your everyday denim ensembles.

My client Wanda (below) recently took this approach. As a busy mompreneur, comfort is super important to her. She's now starting to incorporate ruffles and sultry designed tops into her wardrobe and to say it's working for her would be an understatement!

SPICE UP YOUR SWEATS WITH COLORFUL SHOES & ACCESSORIES

This closet hack is the perfect way to upgrade those faded sweatshirts and bottoms that you've considered throwing away! By pairing a worn out, faded, stretched out piece with another sexy-fitting separate and eye-catching accessories, you'll give your damaged goods a fresh and presentable look.

Before you say goodbye to your favorite spring heels for a few months, don't forget to try them out with a pretty pair of sheer stockings and tights to keep your legs warm while you slay in low cut shoes all year long. Floral tights or ones with a lace design typically go nicely with open toe strappy heels or pointy toe pumps.

I hope you enjoyed these closet hacks!

PASSION MAKES PURSUING YOUR GOALS WORTH WHILE: THE LESSON I'M CURRENTLY LEARNING ABOUT CELEBRATING PROGRESS & BEING PATIENT WITH MYSELF AND MY BRAND

WRITTEN BY SHARRA GREENE AND CAPTURED BY ALLEN STEWART

stewdioxsharra1.JPG

I'm sure that all creatives and people with a dream can relate to having so many ideas, so many things that we want to do that our thoughts and feelings are sometimes all over the place. We want to know that these things will be executed to the best of our ability and that we will benefit from the accomplishment of these goals in one way or another. We just want to know. I've recently discovered  that these goals have to be completed one step at a time and all we can do is focus in and clap for ourselves after each step until we see it through.

A lot of times, we tend to wish that we could see the future. We wish we could know exactly what will happen and exactly how to be prepared for it all, ahead of time. Essentially, we are asking for a cheat sheet to life. I, myself still wish for this sometimes. But what I am realizing is that there are actually some things that we're not supposed to know before we start on the pursuit of our dreams. Maybe if we knew everything that it would take, some of us wouldn't even begin.

When I started this journey at 17 years old (I'm 21 now),  taking my love for fashion and style seriously and establishing it as a real career goal, I had no idea the amount of personal development it would take to even get started in this industry. (let alone, the amount of money, resources, quality contacts, etc.) Most importantly, though, I had no idea the amount of patience that would be required of me to grow in this field. Looking back, I'm honestly glad that I didn't know. In this situation, ignorance was in fact bliss for me. True passion and love for what I was pursuing replaced knowing it all. I now know how important it was for me to embrace the unknown and I'm proud of myself for starting  when I did.

Today, I am no different from others in the way that I often see where I want to be in life and the things that I want to accomplish and it makes me anxious and sometimes impatient. I've recently been given some opportunities that can really help me to expand my brand and my audience and to continue to hone my craft so that the people who are supposed to receive it, will. (you will see these opportunities unfold if you follow my blog posts) Imagining the possiblities, of course causes me to want to know what's on the other side for me. But I'm learning to just put my best foot forward with every photoshoot, meeting, magazine submission, new client, blog post, and everything else that I'm working on and to let my passion drive me, being proud of myself every single time for my effort, no matter the outcome, and to be patient and keep pushing forward.

When all we can see and feel at the moment is the unrelenting passion that we have for what we want to do and who we can be, that passion makes it much easier to stay the course and be patient, even when we don't know all that the future holds. I feel this is one of the greatest life lessons I'm learning right now and I hope it will be for you, as well.
